Eisenhower matrix template (free, printable and online)
An Eisenhower matrix template is a blank 2×2 grid. One axis is urgent versus not urgent, the other is important versus not important. You write each task in the box where it belongs, and the grid tells you what to do first.
1. Urgent and important: do first
- Deadline this week
- A problem that cannot wait
2. Not urgent but important: schedule
- Planning and goals
- Health and relationships
3. Urgent but not important: delegate
- Interruptions
- Requests that are not yours
4. Not urgent, not important: drop
- Time wasters
- Busywork with no result
How to fill in the template
- Write down everything on your mind, without sorting yet.
- Ask two questions for each task: does it have a real deadline soon (urgent), and does it move something that matters to you forward (important)?
- Place it in one box. Be honest: if everything lands in the first box, ask which tasks only feel urgent because someone is waiting.
- Act by box: do box 1 now, put box 2 in your calendar, hand off or batch box 3, and cross out box 4.
- Review weekly. Tasks move over time. A box 2 task with no date will become a box 1 emergency.
Paper or online?
The PDF is good for a quick plan on your own. The online version is useful when other people are involved: a TierTask board is live-shared, so a partner, a family or a small team can add and move tasks together, and each task can have a deadline, files and a tagged person.
